National Schools Sailing Association National Championships Regatta 2017
… are you 8 – 18yrs and want to go racing?

24-28 July the National Schools Sailing Association National Championships was hosted by Grafham Water SC. (1991 acres v’s Boughs 265!) County teams competed in boats as diverse as Optimists to a Nacra F16 on three courses on which eight fleets raced, totalling 240 boats and approximately 350 young sailors.

I took a BBSC RIB and mark laid on the ‘Medium / Fast’ handicap course giving me a front row seat for what was a mainly breezy regatta. All ten races were sailed on Monday, Tuesday Thursday & Friday allowing for two discards, the racing was keen, physical and close enough to leave many parents with nibbled finger nails!

Four Bough Beech sailors raced in the Kent team and certainly have their tales to tell. To summarise Kent results were; Toppers 1st/55 ; Laser 1st/19 ; Laser Radial 3rd BBSC/PBSC Lewis Humphries & 13th BBSC Connie Hill / 55 ; Laser 4.7 1st BBSC Heather Denbigh / 34 ; Fast H’cap 2nd/29 ; Medium H’cap 1st/29 ; Rookie H’cap fleet 1st/18 ; Rookie Toppers BBSC Luka Franklin 2nd/19.

Wednesday saw the Single handers trophy raced in Toppers, Kent 1st/36 ; The ‘All Comers’ race, Kent 1st/80 and the only trophy Kent didn’t figure in was the prestigious Mount Hayes won this year by Cumbria. Kent won the overall team trophy for the fourth year running.

To be involved link in with Kent Schools Sailing Association who runs year round training and racing regattas all around Kent, including BBSC. Entries to the Nationals are through KSSA.

Full results on the NSSA web site. KSSA web site has details of all Kent events and BBSC youth reps Connie Hill & Heather Denbigh would love to talk to you if you are interested in getting involved.
