Raiders & Squad Session #6

Tess Sadowski  |  01-May-2017

Although the conditions were challenging, to say the least, everyone did very well and had fun.

The session was led by Dariusz and Heather, who despite the shifty and gusty SE wind, managed to set up a series of activities that were the right level for all; no easy feat, seeing as abilities ranged from novice to club racers.  The first activity was a simple figure-of-eight course, tacking on each mark.  This helped to practice technique in strong winds and helped those who hadn’t sailed in a while to get used to moving in the boat again.  A game of follow-my-leader came afterwards so everybody could practice boat handling and control.  Progressing onto more difficult activities, the instructors added an additional gybe mark to make a triangular course.

Of course, there were many capsizes and many ‘turtles’ as well.  Nearly everybody went swimming at least once, some a few times more.  This wasn’t surprising, given the conditions: it was both very gusty and shifty.  However, everybody enjoyed themselves (even when wet and cold!) and learned something from the session.
