Youth Sailing Contact & Medical Form

For junior members the club provides a regular programme of Sunday afternoon training activities for children from eight years and up through Pirates and Buccaneers (P&Bs) and separately for the more experienced through Raiders and Squad (R&S) group.  These sessions are run by our volunteer instructors and helpers; the main aim is to provide an opportunity to learn and improve sailing skills whilst having fun in a friendly group in a safe environment.  No certification takes places during these sessions – although if your children have RYA logbooks, particular skills may be signed off by the instructors.

Sailing Weeks in May half term and mid August offer  youth training for junior members and there are also training events at the club provided in conjunction with class associations and Kent Schools Sailing Association.  The Emma Nettleship Trophy is the BBSC annual regatta for youth sailors which takes place in September and offers prizes In a number of different age ranges.

May Sailing Week: 29th May – 1st June 2018

Four days of sailing training to get you ready for the summer season

August Sailing Week: 20-24th August 2018

Our traditional Sailing Week takes place in August and offers five full days of youth training and fun on the water.  Many families will also take advantage of the opportunity to camp and free sail at the club for the week.

Sunday Afternoon Youth Training

Regular junior training sessions run on Sunday afternoons from 2pm to 4pm and is suitable for children from 8 years upwards.  If you are planning to use a club boat – aim to be at the club for 12.30 to allow time to register, change and rig the boat.   A parent or guardian must stay on site at all times during the sessions (even better if you also get involved with helping out!).  Please ensure that your children are dressed appropriately for the conditions: eg. wetsuits, sailing gloves, sailing boots, buoyancy aid, spraytop, hat, sun-cream.

Pirates and Buccaners

P&Bs (Pirates and Buccaneers) provides an opportunity to learn the basics of sailing in a fun and safe environment.

The group is often split into two separate ones – to allow better grouping according to age and ability.  Booking a place on a P&B session is done via email (piratesbbsc@gmail.com).  The maximum number of children we can have per session is dependent on how many instructors and volunteers are available on the day, weather conditions and boat availability.

Raiders and Squad

R&S (Raiders and Squad) is aimed at those who are able to beat upwind and sail a triangular course competently.  The Raiders group allows the children to develop their sailing, boat handling and seamanship skills further; whilst the Squad places more focus on racing skills in a series of progressive and fun activities.

For more information contact Mike Warwicker (youthbbsc@gmail.com) and Dariusz Sadowski (dms.sailtraining@gmail.com).

KSSA and Class Association Training

There are additional training sessions throughout the year in conjunction with various youth class associations.  Open race meetings for youth classes are also held at the club and many young members will also travel to other clubs to participate in youth events both locally at our neighboring clubs or further afield at national or international events.

We have a strong association with the KSSA (Kent Schools Sailing Association) and sailing sessions run by the KSSA whether held at Bough Beech or in other locations are very popular with our sailors.

Events at Bough Beech 2018

  • Laser Open: 24 March 2018

  • RS  Feva Open: 12 May 2018

  • RS Tera Association Training & Racing: 23-24 Jun 2018

Suitable Sailing Clothing

Wetsuits or drysuits are recommended for most months of the year, and compulsory between October and April.  Additional fleecy layers, gloves + woolly /fleecy hats also recommended in the colder months.

Some dinghy sailing clothing suppliers:

The Dinghy Show held in March at Alexandra Palace is a good place to search for clothing (show bargins to be had)

Young BBSC members have also recently been selected for inclusion and training in the RYA London & South East Topper and the RS Tera Squads.  We’ve also had several teams take part in the RS Feva World Championships in Medemblik in 2017.

Further information about training can be obtained by contacting any of the youth training team or check the club website or the active Facebook page for updates.

Happy sailing – and see you on the water!
